What is a Variable Annuity?
A VA is an investment product sold by insurance companies. VA's are marketed as retirement savings for long-term investors. A VA is a combination of an insurance product and a security (usually a mutual fund). The insurance feature allows the investor to receive periodic payments from the investment over time, and provides a death benefit to a designated beneficiary upon the investor's death. The securities feature allows the investor to invest in the securities markets. Unlike a fixed annuity, the payments to a VA owner vary with the returns on the investments the owner has selected.
Large investment houses have been allowed to trade in and out of variable annuities, increasing the cost to smaller investors who may be in it for the long term. The large investment houses then take the profits that the smaller investors hope to accumulate over time.
